Seeking Live-In Handy Human for ARQ Barn - Applications OPEN

Seeking a live-in skilled tradesperson for communal living and/or workshop space in a unique and expressive rural arts community, ARQ Barn

Handy-person is expected to contribute 25-35 hours per month at individuals own scheduling on pre-identified property repairs and improvements in exchange for residential studio space (Grapevine Studio - 850sq feet) ($125/month utilities not included); and option of additional personal work studio (see below). Hours can be condensed into one week, or spread throughout the month, with flexibility to help with emergencies or immediate repairs as needed.

Seeking someone experienced in leading and completing projects independently and collaboratively, with skills in: general carpentry (timber framing would be a plus!), exterior painting, some experience with trouble-shooting basic electric and plumbing issues, and openness to taking on other projects as identified. ARQ includes 16 studios across six former agricultural buildings in Mecklenburg, and includes artists and tradespeople of many mediums. The Handy-Human position is a work exchange agreement for helping with regular repairs, studio improvements, weatherproofing, and creative problem solving.

This is for a single occupancy. Pets are okay if they are non-reactive, and accustomed to living with other animals (the property already has multiple other dogs and cats). Mecklenburg is “centrally dislocated” so all individuals on the property must have their own vehicle. ARQ does have a property truck that can be borrowed for transporting materials.

Seeking a commitment of 2 years in the position (2025-2027), with option to review and terminate position after year one if work expectations are not met, or possibility to extend position can be discussed in year 2. Will require monthly submission of projects, expenses, and materials to the property managers (Alex & Zoë) who both live on-site.

Please fill out the application, and include pictures of recent building/carpentry/repair projects, and references for people you have completed work for in the past.

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis, with a hope to move someone in by May or June 2025.

ABOUT - ARQ is an intentional community in the hamlet of Mecklenburg that prioritizes supporting local tradespeople and creatives, collaboration, and the natural environment. We curate, create, build, and offer Studio Spaces, Residential Spaces, and intentional Food Systems. Our intentional community has included over one hundred people who have lived or worked in an ARQ space over the last 26 years.

While living at ARQ the Handy-human can pursue classes with other ARQtists including metal smithing, forging, glass carving, food cultivation, mushroom growing, and so much more! This is a wonderful opportunity for someone excited to learn new skills and interact with an extensive community of skilled folks!
