sorting out the dream - through collaboration - connection - and many many spreadsheets

We incorporated in 2023, making ARQ an official project of Inherited Dreams LLC.

We have no foundation, no endowment, no regular donors, and currently no paid staff. We make ends meet creatively, collectively, and through community relationships and our local networks.

By the tax code we are a “rental property”. However a core tenet of our property vision is to provide affordable spaces for creatives and tradespeople in our rural community.

To that end we keep rents as low as we can to functionally cover property costs, and collectively cost-share utilities like electricity, heating, cooling, laundry, and internet among all residents.

We put forth a lot of effort to source repair and replacement materials through local second hand options, and are huge supporters of Finger Lakes ReUse!

We also offer work-trade options for ARQtist residents, to work off up to half of their rent through contributing to necessary property repairs and maintenance.

We are actively seeking grant programs, small business support, academic interest, individual sponsors, creative building and repair options, and financial suggestions to continue our efforts in supporting affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and rural arts and crafts.

If you are interested in collaborating with us, or have ideas on how to keep these dreams accessible please reach out!

Recent Financial Support for Property Improvement Projects

2023 - Historic Barn Tax Credit - New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation

The Historic Barn Rehabilitation Tax Credit program offers a state income tax credit equal to 25% of the expenditures incurred to rehabilitate a historic barn (built pre-1950). The Grey Barn is the only structure at ARQ that qualifies for this program as it is used exclusively for storage, and not as a living or work space.

2018 - Arbor Housing & Development - Septic system overhaul for ARQbarn

Arbor Housing & Development supported our Real Estate Development grant application to drastically improve the ARQ Barn’s septic systems in 2018, while keeping our rents within local affordability ranges. The original system was intended for 80,000 chickens, and had reached capacity with the addition of multiple human work spaces.

2024 - BLOC Power, installation by Halco

Heatpump installation for 15 studios in the main ARQ Barn providing propane-free heating and cooling throughout the year. A huge step forward in reducing the carbon footprint of ARQ!

Thanks to BlocPower’s inventiveness and commitment to the property vision ARQ will receive an 87% rebate on our installation! This rebate is coordinated through the GasKicker and Clean Energy incentives as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, and New York States 2030 climate goals.
